Diretrizes para Autores

ORNITHOLOGIA (ISSN 1808-7221) is the scientific journal of The National Center for Bird Conservation Research - CEMAVE/ICMBio that publishes original articles and scientific communication on the following subjects: research using banding technique, bird geographic distribution, migration patterns, ecology and conservation. Studies using other methods, monographs and bird-based surveys are also considered.

Manuscripts should be submitted in English, but we also accept manuscripts  in Portuguese or Spanish.

Printed version of ORNITHOLOGIA is distributed without charge to all seniors banders registered  in SNA.net and also deposited in various libraries of Teaching and Research Institutions in Brazil and Latin America. MANUSCRIPTS

Only unpublished researches will be accepted.

Manuscripts should have the following structure:

INTRODUCTION, METHODS, RESULTS, DISCUSSION, ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AND REFERENCES.

TITLE

Name of species mentioned in the title must be followed by the scientific name with author and year.

ABSTRACT

Abstract should contain only one paragraph and describe the aims, methods, results, conclusions and importance of the research in a clear and succinct fashion. A total of 300 words must not be exceeded and should not contain any citations (exceptions will be evaluated by publisher). The abstract should also be accompanied by a Portuguese version 'Resumo' and keywords (Palavras-chave).

KEY WORDS

A maximum of five descriptors in alphabetical order and different from those used in the title should come after the abstract. Descriptors should be separated by comma.

REFERENCES

All citations  in the text, tables and figure captions should be listed at the end of the text, in alphabetical and chronological order.

Cite references in the text in small capitals (VERSALETE) as follow: (SICK 1997), LIRA & SOARES (1987), NASCIMENTO et al. (2001). List multiple citations in chronological order. Example: (ONIKI 1978, 1980, 1981, BIERREGAARD 1988, AZEVEDO-JUNIOR & ANTAS 1990, MAGALHÃES 1999, ONIKI & WILLIS 1999, NASCIMENTO et al. 2000).

Articles in scientific journals: cite full name of the journal, where it was published, without abbreviations, in boldface. Volume citation should also be in bold. Examples:

Books and book chapters: cite as follows author names, year, title, publisher, city, state or province (or country), where it was published and number of pages  Examples:

Audio content: CDs, tapes, etc. should be cited with the author' names, title and year, the record's name and city, state or province, or country where it was published and the type of media used. Examples:

FIGURES AND TABLES

Mention each figure and table in the text in the sequence cited. Figures should not repeat information already mentioned in tables and vice versa.

Figures: Photographs, drawings, graphs and maps should be described as figures. Photographs must be sharp, well contrasted and not mixed with drawings. A maximum of five figures is allowed and the minimum resolution accepted is 1600x1200 pixels (equivalent to 2 mega pixels). Digitalized figures should have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, in colored or grayscale tones. Figures are accepted in 'jpg', 'bmp', 'png', 'tif' or 'gif' formats. Color photos and illustrations will published only in eletronic version.

Tables: Data in the tables should not replicate results already given in the text. Tables should be constructed using MS Excel software and are accepted either in 'portrait' or 'landscape' configuration. Table dimensions should not exceed the maximum 22 cm wide. Include horizontal lines for the main heading and the end of the table. The rows of tables and graphs should have a thickness of 1pt. Each table should begin on a separate page.

Figure and Table legends: Write legends in paragraphs in a separate page.  Figures should be numbered with arabic numerals (e.g., 'Figure 1') and tables in roman numerals (e.g., 'Table I'), in the same order as they appear in the text. Legends must be written in a clear way without reference to the manuscript. Indicate footnotes by superscript numerals.

SCIENTIFIC AND POPULAR SPECIE NAMES

When a given species is mentioned for the first time, use unabbreviated scientific name followed by author and date. Thereafter, English or scientific names can be used.

For Brazilian birds, scientific English names and their order of presentation should follow the  updated nomenclature of Comitê Brasileiro de Registros Ornitológicos (CBRO), according to Avian Primary List  at http://www.cbro.org.br. English name suggested by CBRO is recommended. Examples: Spotted Piculet Picumnus pygmaeus (Lichtenstein, 1823), Caatinga Antwren Herpsilochmus selowi Whitney & Pacheco 2000, Broad-tipped Hermit Anopetia gounellei (Boucard, 1891).

TEXT FORMAT

Use flat space in the text, the same size (12 point) and type of font throughout the manuscript.

Use real italics, not underlines (except in URL adress). Indent each new paragraph in introduction, methods, results and discussion.

DATE AND HOUR FORMAT

Use Date European System (e.g.., 30 June 1998) and  day with 24 hours (e.g.., 08:00 h and 23:00 h). Refer to real hour (not Brazilian Summer Time).

NUMBERS AND NUMERALS

Write the numbers of one to nine (e.g., five nestlings) unless they correspond to a measure (e.g., 7 mm, 6 months, 2 min). Use numerals for numbers bigger than nine (e.g., 15 nestlings, 85 mm, 12 months, 15 min, 10.000 m2). If a number is part of a series with at least one number being 10 or more, use only numerals (e.g., 7 males and 15 females).

Decimals should be presented in the English standard format using point (.)

Percentage: use 50%, not 50 percent (without space between the number and %).

SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION

It should contain only the abstract version in Portuguese 'Resumo', followed by the keywords 'Palavras-chave'. It is not necessary to divide the text in Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion. In the end of the text, include Acknowledgements and References, Figures and Tables.

VOUCHER SPECIMENS

When applicable, manuscripts should mention the scientific collection/Institution where the voucher specimens used for  taxonomic identification of the species referred in the article is deposited.

SUBMISSION

ORNITHOLOGIA online submission aims to speed publication and manuscript decisions. Manuscript must be submitted online through Electronic System for Journal Publishing, provided by the ICMBio Journals Portal at:

https://www2.icmbio.gov.br/revistaeletronica/index.php/Ornith. Using this System authors can submit manuscripts and check the manuscript status along the review and publication process.

New authors will need to create an account and password. Manuscript-submission process is easy, fast and self explanatory. Once you are registered on the system, you can check the status of your submitted manuscript(s), make changes to your contact information, or make future submissions by logging on to your existing account.

Manuscripts must be saved in separate files (one file for text and legends, and one file for each table and figure). Files containing the text of the manuscript and legends  should be submitted as 'Original Document' and the files containing tables and figures should be submitted as 'Supplementary Document'.

The submission file should be in Microsoft Word format, OpenOffice, or RTF, not exceeding 5 MB.

Complete authors names, Institution adresse should subscribed on line during manuscript submission. This information can not be mentioned in manuscript text (see Ensuring a Blind Peer Review), although will be present in the publication.

ENSURING A BLIND PEER REVIEW

To ensure the integrity of the blind peer-review for submission to Ornithologia, the authors should checking to see if the following steps have been taken with regard to the text and the file properties:

   1. The authors of the document have deleted their names from the text, with "Author" and year used in the references and footnotes, instead of the authors' name, article title, etc.

   2. With Microsoft Office documents, author identification should also be removed from the properties for the file (see under File in Word), by clicking on the following, beginning with File on the main menu of the Microsoft application: File > Save As > Tools (or Options with a Mac) > Security > Remove personal information from file properties on save > Save.

   3. With PDFs, the authors' names should also be removed from Document Properties found under File on Adobe Acrobat's main menu.

MANUSCRIPTS ANALYSIS

Manuscripts submitted to ORNITHOLOGIA will be previously evaluated by Assistant Editors to verify their accordance to the journal rules. Manuscripts not in accordance with the journal instructions will be returned to the authors. Once the manuscript follows the journal rules it will be sent to the Editor in charge who will select at least two reviewers. Copy-edited with reviewers comments will be sent to the corresponding author for evaluation. If the author is asked to submit a revision, it has to be sent back within 15 days (for scientific communication), and 30 days (for articles,) to resubmit the corrected manuscript to the Editor. The final proof will be sent to author to approval. This is the last chance to modify the text, because the next stage is limited to page layouts.

Before publication, the proof will be sent to the principal author for approval. This final approval must be made within five days.

RESPONSABILITY

Grammatical and scientific article content is the responsibility of authors.

PUBLICATION COSTS

All publication and distribution costs of ORNITHOLOGIA will be done by Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation. Reprints will not be distributed to authors, although articles in free access are offered in publication of ORNITHOLOGIA in https://www2.icmbio.gov.br/revistaeletronica/index.php/Ornith
