The silver porgy, Diplodus argenteus, is a marine fish native to the Atlantic Ocean, typically inhabiting rocky bottom environments. While this species is not commonly found along the sandy shores of Rio Grande do Sul, it is hypothesized that the Atlântida Fishing Pier provides a suitable habitat, particularly around its concrete pillars. To investigate this hypothesis, a seven-day sampling study was conducted using recreational fishing rods. The pier was divided into four areas, each further subdivided into two zones: A, within 5 m of the pillars, and B, between 6 and 40 m from the pillars. Results revealed that D. argenteus was exclusively captured in areas close to the pillars. Additionally, 14 other fish species were caught, exhibiting varying distribution patterns influenced by the pier's structure. The pillars create a unique microhabitat, characterized by distinct ecological conditions. By comparing these findings to studies on artificial reefs, marinas, and other man-made structures, insights can be gained into the ecological interactions between marine organisms and human-made environments. Understanding these interactions is crucial for effective environmental management in coastal areas.
