Paleosuchus palpebrosusAbstract
Paleosuchus palpebrosus is found in most of Brazil, and in ten other South American
countries. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) calculated for Brazil is 7.433.660,5 km2
. Its Area of
Occupation (AOO) is certainly larger than 20.000 km2 . However, the species, which occurs
naturally in low densities, suffers diverse threats because it occupies aquatic habitats, such as palm
swamps, streams, headwaters of rivers and floodplain forests near towns, roads, agricultural areas
and mines. Conservation of the species is dependent on the maintenance of streams and rivers,
their headwaters, and the connectivity among habitats.
