Abstract

Contamination of marine ecosystems and other aquatic environments by plastic and its derivatives is a serious and growing problem today. Fish and other aquatic animals are directly and indirectly affected by the presence of plastics in their habitats, since many species, regardless of their size, easily ingest different types of plastics. In this study, we investigated the presence of plastics and plastic waste of any kind in the digestive tract of mullets, fish of the genus Mugil, which are easily found on the Brazilian coast and widely consumed as part of the human diet. Of the 57 fish that had their digestive tract analyzed, 40 had some type of residue from plastics along with the food content. Materials such as nylon threads of different colors and small fragments of blue plastic were observed in the digestive tract of these animals. These results are similar to other studies carried out in the same region with different species of fish and also corroborated by studies from other regions of the Brazilian coast. The data obtained in the present work demonstrate that the fish studied can ingest different types of plastics when they are present in their natural habitat, indicating the danger of the presence of these materials in aquatic ecosystems.
