Abstract

Myxine sotoi is endemic to Brazil and known from a restricted area, which has been
extensively sampled. Distribution stretches only 2,500km along the coastline and the currently
known depth range on the continental slope (610 to 840m) is approximately 3km wide, which
results in a 7,500km2
extent of occurrence. The main threat to species is the bottom trawling
activity, which is known to be very destructive to species’ habitat, particularly to the scleractinian
deep-sea corals. This threat occurs across the distribution area of the species characterizing a single
location. Myxine sotoi is categorized as Vulnerable (VU) by the criteria B1ab(iii)
