Abstract

Population surveys confirm that, in the Brazilian Pantanal, C. yacare presents one of the
largest and most vigorous natural populations of crocodilians in the world, with densities exceeding
100 individuals per km2
throughout the entire Pantanal lowland. The population size across the
basin is in the millions. However, poaching for illegal trade in meat has been documented, which
represents a worrying aspect for the conservation of the species.
