Abstract

The Cerrado biome is composed of a mosaic of vegetation types influenced by different environmental and historical factors. Here we present the results of up to nine years of monitoring woody plants in five Conservation Units (CU): Estação Ecológica Serra Geral do Tocantins/BA-TO, National Park of Brasília/DF, National Park of Chapada dos Veadeiros/GO, National Park of Serra da Bodoquena/MS and National Park of Serra do Cipó/MG. Following the Monitora Program protocol, we inventoried seven sampling units (four savannas and three forests) in 2014, 2018 and 2023. We analyzed floristic similarity between areas, as well as vegetation dynamics and biomass estimates. There was low similarity between sampling units located in different CUs, which reflects the complex physiognomic and biogeographic heterogeneity of the Cerrado. Savannas had richness between 41 and 59 species, diversity between 9.5 and 12.9 (alpha-Fisher) and biomass between 13.4 and 29.9 Mg/ha. Among forests, the Park of Bodoquena (dry forest) showed the highest values of richness (61), diversity (19.2) and biomass (145.4), while in the Park of Serra do Cipó (cerradão) richness (27), diversity (10.5) and biomass (43.7) were lower. There was a balance between mortality and recruitment rates, or a balance favoring recruitment, and maintenance or an increase in biomass. CUs subjected to more fire events showed smaller increases in the number of individuals and biomass. The continuity and expansion of this monitoring will help in the development of strategies to improve the management and evaluation of the effectiveness of these CUs in conserving Cerrado's plant diversity.
