Fire is considered an important ecological factor in several grassland ecosystems. High-altitude grasslands have characteristics that enable fire occurrence, such as the large amount of plant biomass above the ground. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantify biomass accumulation through remote sensing and destructive collections in a high-altitude grassland site located in Serra Fina, APA Federal da Serra da Mantiqueira, southeastern Brazil, before a fire event that occurred in 2020, and discuss susceptibility and management to prevent future fire events. The results of spectral indices were not directly significant for predicting fire events, based on biomass data. Compared to other ecosystems and times after fire, the high-altitude grasslands in Serra Fina showed a higher biomass in a shorter period, indicating a rapid post-fire recovery and high risks of new fires. Thus, the high accumulation of material observed in the study area in only three years recommends strategies to be used to manage this material. Several protected areas with grassland ecosystems have adopted integrated fire management, using prescribed and controlled burning, to decrease fuel load and prevent larger fires.
