Abstract

Sustainable forest management presents itself as a viable alternative, allowing for the use of its services and the social and economic inclusion of local communities, while also conserving the forest. The objective of this study was to assess, based on population structure data, the potential for sustainable management of native Brazil nut groves in the Ouro Preto River Extractive Reserve (RESEX), Rondônia. The methodology used was a 100% inventory of Brazil nut trees in plots established in two areas of native groves within the RESEX: one with terrestrial access, where more than five families collect nuts every year (collective), and another with river access, where only one family harvests nuts each season (family-managed). The results showed that both areas have potential for sustainable management. However, the area with terrestrial access requires actions to promote the recruitment of new Brazil nut trees, while the river access area needs vine cutting.
