Diet of the yellow-faced siskin Spinus yarrellii (Audubon, 1839) based on field observations and citizen science data analysis

Abstract

The yellow-faced siskin Spinus yarrellii (Audubon, 1839), a species endemic to Brazil and classified as vulnerable, has its survival threatened mainly by illegal capture and other factors such as hybridization, poisoning, habitat loss, and climate change. This study aimed to expand knowledge regarding the diet and feeding habits of the species in order to support management and conservation strategies. The research was conducted in the Cariri Environmental Protection Area (Paraíba Cariri), in Areia (Paraíba Brejo), and Bayeux (João Pessoa Metropolitan Region), through field observations using binoculars, cameras and the analysis of records available on citizen science platforms (WikiAves, eBird, and iNaturalist). The plant species were identified and catalogued. In total, 28 plant species were recorded in the diet, 14 native and 14 exotic, with a predominance of the Asteraceae family (35.71%). Possible consumption of insect eggs was also observed. Detailing the diet of S. yarrellii (Audubon, 1839) contributes significantly to the understanding of its ecology, offering support for conservation actions, the identification of priority areas for the release of rehabilitated individuals, and the creation of conservation units.
