Editorial process

1.Submission
The process begins when the author submits the manuscript to the journal through the online system.

2.Preliminary evaluation
The editor-in-chief or another delegated editor conducts a preliminary analysis of the manuscript.
At this stage, the editor verifies whether the article complies with the journal’s editorial policy, accepted manuscript types, scope, and formatting guidelines.

There are two possible outcomes:

  • Not approved: The editor considers the manuscript unsuitable and archives it.

  • Approved: The editor considers the manuscript suitable and assigns it to a subject editor, who will forward it for anonymous peer review.

3.Peer review
The handling editor invites at least two specialists to review the manuscript.
The reviewers analyze the content and provide technical reports with recommendations.

4.Decision-making
Based on the reviewers’ reports, the editor decides to:

  • Approve the manuscript;

  • Approve it with revisions; or

  • Reject the manuscript.

5.Possible outcomes after the decision:
a) Rejected: The editor sends the decision letter to the author, and the manuscript is archived.
b) Approved with revisions: The editor indicates the changes that the author must make. The author then makes the modifications and resubmits the revised manuscript, providing justifications when not adopting certain reviewers’ suggestions.

6.New round of review (if necessary)
If the revisions are extensive, the editor may initiate a new round of peer review so that reviewers can confirm whether the requested changes were made.

7.Approved
Once approved, the editor forwards the manuscript for copyediting.

8.Copyediting
The copy editor or proofreader performs grammatical, spelling, and stylistic corrections.

9.Layout design
The edited text is sent to the layout designer, who prepares the final article layout according to the journal’s graphic standards.

10.Proofreading
The editor sends the formatted article to the authors for proofreading, allowing them to check the layout and identify any final adjustments.

11.Indexing
The editor validates the article in the system, reviews metadata, updates titles, abstracts, and keywords, and assigns the DOI (Digital Object Identifier).
Once this process is completed, the article is indexed and officially published.

12. Publication
The article is published on the journal’s website, and the authors receive an email notifying them of the publication.

13. Dissemination
After publication, the article is promoted on the journal’s social media channels and through other communication platforms.

This process ensures that articles published in Biodiversidade Brasileira undergo rigorous scientific evaluation, technical review, and editorial quality control, guaranteeing the journal’s reliability and academic standards.
