For authors

Dear authors, before submitting, it is important to carefully read the following guidelines.

1. REGISTRATION IN THE BIODIVERSIDADE BRASILEIRA JOURNAL SYSTEM

It is mandatory that the corresponding author be properly registered in the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform used by Biodiversidade Brasileira.

Registration is required to access the submission area and to track all stages of the editorial process, from manuscript submission to the final decision. Additionally, it ensures that authorship information, institutional affiliation, email, and ORCID are correctly recorded in the journal's database. Therefore, registration must be completed carefully.

Steps to register:

  1. Access the journal's website: https://revistaeletronica.icmbio.gov.br/BioBR

  2. Click on “Register” in the top right menu.

  3. Fill in all required fields, including full name, affiliation, and email.

  4. After submission, check your email (including spam) to confirm registration and activate your account.

  5. Only after account activation will it be possible to submit a manuscript by selecting “New Submission” in the author dashboard.

If the author already has an account, simply log in with your credentials to start the submission.

Important: Each author must maintain only one active account. Using a single profile facilitates communication with the editorial team and avoids duplicate records.

2. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Only original and unpublished manuscripts are accepted. Biodiversidade Brasileira considers a manuscript original and unpublished if it has not been published in any scientific journal, either in print or online.

For submissions of works already available in institutional repositories (dissertations or theses) or conference proceedings, authors should reflect on the appropriateness of publishing the manuscript, provided it is adapted to the journal's accepted formats and its relevance is justified in the SUBMISSION DOCUMENT.

3. TYPES OF ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPTS

Original Research Article: Academic publication presenting new results from empirical or experimental research. Its goal is to advance knowledge in a given field through discoveries based on systematically collected, analyzed, and interpreted data.

Structure: Title, Abstract and Keywords, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, References.

Maximum abstract length: 250 words, including spaces

Maximum manuscript length: 8,000 words, excluding references

Maximum number of figures: 4

Maximum number of tables and boxes: 4

Review Article: Scientific publication that analyzes and synthesizes existing knowledge on a topic based on previously published sources. It does not present original data but provides a thorough critical analysis of the available literature.

Structure: Title, Abstract and Keywords, Introduction, Methods, Development (literature discussion), Conclusion, References.

Maximum abstract length: 250 words, including spaces

Maximum manuscript length: 8,000 words, excluding references

Maximum number of figures: 4

Maximum number of tables and boxes: 4

Case Study: Type of scientific article that investigates a specific case in detail and systematically. Its goal is to analyze case characteristics, identify patterns, and generate protocols applicable to similar situations.

Structure: Title, Abstract and Keywords, Introduction, Methods, Case Description, Analysis and Discussion, Conclusion, References.

Maximum abstract length: 250 words, including spaces

Maximum manuscript length: 8,000 words, excluding references

Maximum number of figures: 4

Maximum number of tables and boxes: 4

Opinion Article: Publication that presents a critical analysis, interpretation, or position of a specialist on a socially and/or environmentally relevant topic. Unlike original or review articles, it does not present empirical research or systematic literature review but offers an argument based on scientific knowledge and existing evidence.

Structure: Continuous text, usually without formal subdivisions, but including: Introduction of the idea, Supported argumentation, Final considerations, References.

Maximum manuscript length: 4,000 words, excluding references

Maximum number of figures: 3

Maximum number of tables and boxes: 3 (up to 400 words each)

Scientific Note: A brief communication aimed at reporting novel discoveries or relevant observations in the lab or field. It differs from an article because it is not extensive enough to constitute a full scientific article.

Structure: Continuous text, usually without formal subdivisions, but including: Title, Abstract and Keywords, Introduction, Methods, Conclusion, References.

Maximum abstract length: 250 words, including spaces

Maximum manuscript length: 2,500 words, excluding references

Maximum number of figures: 2

Maximum number of tables and boxes: 2

- The journal accepts supplementary material in any format, according to its specificity.

4. DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED

When submitting the manuscript, the corresponding author must provide a separate file called SUBMISSION DOCUMENT, including the following information:

  • Title, authors, affiliations, ORCID, acknowledgments, and authorship declaration according to the CRediT taxonomy

  • Justification of the manuscript’s importance for the journal

  • Conflict of interest declaration

  • Research authorization numbers (Sisbio, CEUA, Plataforma Brasil, etc.) and ethics committee approval for research involving animals or humans, when applicable

  • AI usage declaration: Authors must state if they used artificial intelligence in manuscript preparation (writing, figures/graphics creation, data collection or analysis), indicating the tool used, how it was applied, and in which stage of research

  • Word file in the journal’s TEMPLATE/MODEL, keeping authors anonymous (remove any identifying information, including acknowledgments)

Incomplete submissions or missing documents will result in return for corrections. If corrections are not made according to instructions, the manuscript will be rejected. For questions or support, authors can contact the editorial team at biodiversidade.brasileira@icmbio.gov.br

5. FORMATTING RULES

Biodiversidade Brasileira formatting rules concern manuscript presentation, including font size, line spacing, citations, references, and table/figure formatting. Standardization ensures clarity and accuracy. Authors must check conformity with the journal template before submission. Noncompliant submissions will be returned for adjustment.

Grammar correction:
Text must be grammatically correct. Manuscripts should be reviewed by a professional in one of the accepted languages (Portuguese, English, or Spanish). Grammar correction is the author’s responsibility; the journal may make adjustments for clarity if necessary.

Citation and reference style:
The journal adopts the Vancouver style. References are numbered in the order they are cited in the text. Further instructions are in the TEMPLATE/MODEL. Using reference management software is recommended.

Foreign language:
Manuscripts in English or Spanish should be reviewed by a fluent professional, preferably a specialist in the article's field.

Figures, tables, boxes, and charts:

  • Figures: Visual representations (photos, drawings, maps, diagrams, illustrations). Insert directly in Word after the first paragraph where mentioned. High quality: min. 300 dpi (photos), 600 dpi (line drawings), 1000 dpi (text figures). Include caption with numbering (Figure 1, etc.), brief title, and source/author.

  • Tables: Editable text, not images. Number consecutively (Table 1, 2, etc.) with title above. Table notes below. No shading.

  • Boxes: Editable text, numbered consecutively (Box 1, 2, etc.), brief title, explanatory notes if needed. Use sparingly.

  • Charts: Prefer vector graphics (EPS, PDF). Use clear lines, symbols, fonts. Include legend with title and description. Number consecutively. Ensure accessibility for colorblind readers.
