Resumo

Cyperus articulatus L. belongs to the family Cyperaceae and it is a plant species of tall grass, with at one end sprout small, almost insignificant flowers. The stalks of grass produce small tubers that, when cut, exude a fresh, woody and spicy scent, that are traditionally used in cheese baths and manufacture of artisanal colonies in the North region of Brazil. In addition to its use in cosmetics and perfumeries, this plant also possesses medicinal, therapeutic and pharmacological products. Among the pharmacological properties are effects as anti-malaria, sedative, hepato-protective, contraceptive, central nervous system (CNS), insecticide and antimicrobial. This research aimed to review the medicinal, therapeutic and pharmacological properties of the rhizomes of Cyperus articulatus.
