Abstract

This article investigates the occurrences within federal conservation units of wild relatives of plants of food importance. Species of the genera Arachis (peanut genus), Ipomoea (sweet potato genus) and Passiflora (passion fruit genus) were chosen because they are rich and widely occurring in the country, are of interest to agriculture and are less studied than other genera of food importance. The geographical occurrence records of the species in Brazil were extracted from the GBIF website, and then only the valid names were considered, according to the Flora do
Brasil website. After filtering the data, occurrence maps were generated for each genus and species, and quantitative analyses were carried out on occurrence in biomes and federal conservation units on a national scale. With a focus on the Cerrado, the extent to which occurrence
records are in remnant or degraded areas of the biome was assessed. It was found that the proportion of occurrence records for species of the genera Arachis, Ipomoea and Passiflora is relatively low within the federal conservation units. In relation to the advance of deforestation in
the Cerrado, it was observed that 1,313 records of occurrences of the genus Arachis in the Cerrado,
91 (7.0%) are in areas deforested between 2000 and 2020; for Ipomoea there are 30 (6.5%) of the 463, and Passiflora, there are 28 (14.2%) of the 197. It can be concluded that the conservation units need further studies to find out what they are safeguarding from plant species of wild relatives with food importance. On the other hand, it is these units, even under pressure, that are largely providing shelter for the conservation of these species.
