The Socio-Environmental Management Course of South Brazil as a strategy of strengthening of artisanal fishery and community integration in protected areas

The socio-environmental management training of Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade’ has acquired territorial scopes aiming to better adapt to regional realities. In southern Brazil, the Global Environmental Facility Project for community integration and strengthening artisanal fishing sought to train social actors to improve the social participation of this segment in the management of the coastal-marine protected areas. The Territorial Socio-Environmental Management Course in Southern Brazil was developed during a planning workshop, associating the themes of past training cycles with new training demands already presented by artisanal fishermen and women. The objective of this work is to present the main results of the course and the resulting contributions to the strengthening of artisanal fishing and the integration of fishing communities in the management of these marine-coastal protected areas. The course brought together 34 participants from ten protected areas distributed across four states. The learning and discussions were very in-depth and provided relevant directions for the artisanal fishing and the coastal and marine extractives’ segments. The course was fundamental for exchanging experiences and sharing local, traditional, technical and scientific knowledge and skills, including orality and cultural transfers, contributing to the collective construction of knowledge, the political formation of participants and the delineation of joint strategies.
